Could Your Body Lotion be Breaking the Certified Organic Label Law

A supplier could be breaking the law if a body lotion or body cream labeled or sold as “Certified Organic” contains emulsifying wax. Make sure to enquire if your product contains this ingredient.
When making a body lotion or cream an emulsion is needed to prevent the product from separating. JoPaulo Naturals is made with emulsifying wax NF which is a naturally derived vegetable base made from vegetable waxes. This is a Vegan option as many emulsifying waxes are animal derived.
The standards set forth for certified organic is geared towards food, as emulsifying wax is not required in food therefore it cannot be certified organic.
Other alternatives considered to be more natural in emulsifying products include botanical derived ingredients. A combination of borax (derived from boric acid) with beeswax is also used.
The Borax Alternative
Although borax is considered safe in detergents it is toxic to be used in a leave on product for the skin, especially where it is damaged or irritated. Studies by the Reproductive Toxicology Group, US Institute of Environmental Health Sciences & FDA have confirmed the dangers of this ingredient. Not only is it on the Canadian hot list but also banned by the European Union for use on children.
The Botanical Alternative
Botanical derivatives in many cases have not been effective in emulsifying oil & water. These emulsions separate within days once made & an un-emulsified product can have severe preservative issues.
Emulsifying Wax NF to date has proven to be the most effective & safest in skin care products. This alone makes it more important than having a Organic Certification.
